1. Regular Cleaning
Oak is a durable material, but dust and grime can dull its natural beauty over time.
- Dusting: Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a microfiber duster to gently remove dust from the treads, risers, and handrails.
- Vacuuming: If your staircase has grooves or intricate details, use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to reach those tricky spots.
- Wiping Down: A damp (not wet) cloth can be used for routine cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals, as they can strip the finish and damage the wood.
2. Protect Against Scratches
Foot traffic, furniture, and even pets can leave marks on your staircase.
- Avoid wearing shoes on your oak staircase, as they can carry grit that may scratch or scuff the surface. Dog claws can also contribute to marks, and high-heeled shoes can be particularly damaging due to their concentrated pressure on a small area, potentially harming the stair treads.
3. Address Spills Immediately
Accidents happen, but it’s important to clean up spills right away to prevent staining or water damage.
- Use a soft, absorbent cloth to blot the spill (don’t rub).
- For stubborn spots, use a wood-safe cleaner and test it on a hidden area first.
4. Maintain the Finish
Unless otherwise requested we use Osmos hard wearing wax oils to protect our staircases, so to keep your oak staircase in top condition, we recommend using the Osmo Floor Maintenance Kit. This kit includes everything you need to clean and protect your oak surfaces effectively without damaging the finish.
